Juz 28 (Al Mujadilah Verse 1 Through At-Tahrim Verse 12)
Here are 5 fruits 🍐 from the language of Quran:
1.) The root (ح - ص - ن) refers to the central concept of protection and safeguarding. From this root, we obtain the word حِصْن (“fortress”) and its plural of حُصُون (“fortresses”), so called because a fortress protects one from external elements and threats. Also from this root, we obtain the word المُحْصِنَة, which refers to a chaste woman who protects her chastity. Also from this root, we obtain the verb حَصُنَ - يَحْصُنُ, which means “to protect/safeguard.” ِAlso from this root, we obtain the Form V verb تَحَصَّنَ, which means “to be fortified” or “to take something as a fortress.” We also have the well-known book حِصْنُ المُسْلِم (“the Fortress of the Muslim”), which is a popular book of supplications and invocations. We see the plural حُصُون (“fortresses”) used in verse 59:2 of Surah Al Hashr: هُوَ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَخْرَجَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِنْ أَهْلِ ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ مِن دِيَـٰرِهِمْ لِأَوَّلِ ٱلْحَشْرِ ۚ مَا ظَنَنتُمْ أَن يَخْرُجُوا۟ ۖ وَظَنُّوٓا۟ أَنَّهُم مَّانِعَتُهُمْ *حُصُونُهُم* مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ فَأَتَىٰهُمُ ٱللَّهُ مِنْ حَيْثُ لَمْ يَحْتَسِبُوا۟ ۖ وَقَذَفَ فِى قُلُوبِهِمُ ٱلرُّعْبَ ۚ يُخْرِبُونَ بُيُوتَهُم بِأَيْدِيهِمْ وَأَيْدِى ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ فَٱعْتَبِرُوا۟ يَـٰٓأُو۟لِى ٱلْأَبْصَـٰرِ (“He is the One Who expelled the disbelievers of the People of the Book from their homes for ˹their˺ first banishment ˹ever˺. You never thought they would go. And they thought *_their strongholds_* would put them out of Allah’s reach. But ˹the decree of˺ Allah came upon them from where they never expected. And He cast horror into their hearts so they destroyed their houses with their own hands and the hands of the believers. So take a lesson ˹from this˺, O people of insight!”)
2.) The root (ج - ل - و) refers to the central meaning of the revealing/exposure of something and its protrusion outwards. From this root, we obtain the verb جَلَا - يَجْلُو, which means “to be manifest/revealed.” Also from this root, we obtain the Form V verb تَجَلَّى, which means “to be manifest/apparent/clarified.” Also from this root, we obtain the word جَلَاء, which refers to the expulsion of someone from their home. We see this word used in verse 59:3 of Surah Al Hashr: وَلَوْلَآ أَن كَتَبَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمُ *ٱلْجَلَآءَ* لَعَذَّبَهُمْ فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا ۖ وَلَهُمْ فِى ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ عَذَابُ ٱلنَّارِ (“Had Allah not decreed *_exile_* for them, He would have certainly punished them in this world. And in the Hereafter they will suffer the punishment of the Fire”). In this context, the word جَلاء refers to expulsion from one’s home.
3.) The root (ف - ي - ء) refers to the idea of returning to a praiseworthy condition. From this root meaning, we obtain the word فَاءَ - يَفِيءُ, which means “to return.” When used with “shadow” (eg: فَاءَ الظِّلُّ), it means to return from the west to the east. Also from this root, we obtain the Form IV verb أَفَاءَ, which means “to return.” We see this Form IV verb used in verse 59:6 of Surah Al Hashr: وَمَآ *أَفَآءَ* ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ رَسُولِهِۦ مِنْهُمْ فَمَآ أَوْجَفْتُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ خَيْلٍۢ وَلَا رِكَابٍۢ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُسَلِّطُ رُسُلَهُۥ عَلَىٰ مَن يَشَآءُ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍۢ قَدِيرٌۭ (“As for the gains Allah *_has turned over_* to His Messenger ﷺ from them—you did not ˹even˺ spur on any horse or camel for such gains. But Allah gives authority to His messengers over whoever He wills. For Allah is Most Capable of everything”). In this ayah, the verb أفاء is referring to the return of the spoils of war.
4.) The root (ج - ب - ل) refers to the idea of the gathering or accumulation of things in a heightened or elevated state. From this root, we obtain the commonly-known word جَبَل (“mountain”) ⛰️ and its plural of جِبَال (“mountains”), so called because a mountain is a gathering and accumulation of dirt, gravel, and other matter, and it is an elevated and heightened thing. Also from this root, we obtain the word جَبَلَة, which refers to the tallest hump of a camel 🐪. We see the word جَبَل used in verse 59:21 of Surah Al Hashr: لَوْ أَنزَلْنَا هَـٰذَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ عَلَىٰ *جَبَلٍ* لَّرَأَيْتَهُۥ خَـٰشِعًۭا مُّتَصَدِّعًۭا مِّنْ خَشْيَةِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ وَتِلْكَ ٱلْأَمْثَـٰلُ نَضْرِبُهَا لِلنَّاسِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ (“Had We sent down this Quran upon *_a mountain_*, you would have certainly seen it humbled and torn apart in awe of Allah. We set forth such comparisons for people, ˹so˺ perhaps they may reflect”).
5.) The root (ص - د - ع) refers to the central concept of the opening, accommodation, expansion, and revealing/exposing of something. From this root, we obtain the Form I verb صَدَعَ, which means “to split something open.” We also obtain the Form VIII verb اِنْصَدَعَ, which means “to be split open” (reflexive meaning). The Form V verb تَصَدَّعَ also carries this reflexive meaning of “being split open.” The word صَدْع can refer to a plant 🌱 in that a plan opens up and “splits open” the ground. Also from this root is the word صُدَاع, which means “headache,” so called because a headache “splits apart” one’s head from pain. We see the Form V verb used in its doer pattern (مُتَصَدِّع) form in verse 59:21 of Surah Al Hashr: لَوْ أَنزَلْنَا هَـٰذَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ عَلَىٰ جَبَلٍ لَّرَأَيْتَهُۥ خَـٰشِعًۭا مُّتَصَدِّعًۭا مِّنْ خَشْيَةِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ وَتِلْكَ ٱلْأَمْثَـٰلُ نَضْرِبُهَا لِلنَّاسِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ (“Had We sent down this Quran upon a mountain, you would have certainly seen it humbled and *_torn apart_* in awe of Allah. We set forth such comparisons for people, ˹so˺ perhaps they may reflect”). In this ayah, the mountains are described as being humbled and torn apart if they were to have the Quran revealed upon them, indicating the weightiness and grandeur of the revelation of the Quran.
