Juz 20 (An-Naml Verse 56 Through Al-Ankabut Verse 45)

Here are 5 fruits 🍐 from the language of Quran:

1.) The root (م - ك - ن) to be able to do something or to have the capacity to do something. From this root, we obtain the Form II verb مَكَّنَ, which means “to cause to be able to do something,” or in other words, “to enable, establish something.” This is because the Form II pattern often indicates causation. We see this Form II verb used in its present-tense form in verse 28:6 of Surah Al-Qasas: *وَنُمَكِّنَ* لَهُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَنُرِىَ فِرْعَوْنَ وَهَـٰمَـٰنَ وَجُنُودَهُمَا مِنْهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يَحْذَرُونَ  (“*_and We establish_* them in the land; and through them show Pharaoh, Hamân, and their soldiers ˹the fulfilment of˺ what they feared.”)

2.) The root (ح - ذ - ر) gives the central idea of being careful and vigilant about a matter. From this root, we obtain the Form I verb حَذِرَ - يَحْذَرُ, which means “to be careful about something.” We also obtain the Form II verb حَذَّرَ, which means “to cause someone/something to be careful,” in other words, “ to warn, alert someone.” This is because the Form II pattern often indicates causation. We see the Form I verb used in verse 28:6 of Surah Al-Qasas: وَنُمَكِّنَ لَهُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَنُرِىَ فِرْعَوْنَ وَهَـٰمَـٰنَ وَجُنُودَهُمَا مِنْهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ *يَحْذَرُونَ*  (“and We establish them in the land; and through them show Pharaoh, Hamân, and their soldiers ˹the fulfilment of˺ what *_they feared_*”).

3.) The root (ف - ر - غ) indicates the central meaning of emptiness. From this root, we obtain the word فَرَاغٌ (“emptiness” or it can be translated as “free time” as well). Also from this root, we obtain the verb فَرَغَ, which means “to be empty of.”  Also from this root, we obtain the Form IV verb أَفْرَغَ, which means “to pour out,” such as the pouring of water from a canister, so called because the process of pouring out a liquid leads to the emptying of the container. We also obtain the doer  pattern derivative (فَارِغ = “empty”) from this root, which we see in verse 28:10 of Surah Al-Qasas: وَأَصْبَحَ فُؤَادُ أُمِّ مُوسَىٰ *فَـٰرِغًا* ۖ إِن كَادَتْ لَتُبْدِى بِهِۦ لَوْلَآ أَن رَّبَطْنَا عَلَىٰ قَلْبِهَا لِتَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ (“And the heart of Moses’ mother ached [*_was empty of_* everything that was not about Musa] so much that she almost gave away his identity, had We not reassured her heart in order for her to have faith ˹in Allah’s promise˺”). Here, the word فَارِغًا refers to the heart of Musa’s mother being emptied of everything other than Prophet Musa عليه السلام

4.) The root (ر - ب - ط) refers to the central concept of intensity and stability. From this root, we obtain the verb رَبَطَ, which means “to link up or connect.” Also from this root, we obtain the expression رَبْطُ الفَرَسِ, which refers to the fastening of a horse in its stable. Also from this root, we obtain the word رِبَاط, which is used to describe any place that is used to protect or restrain something. We see this verb used in verse 28:10 of Surah Al-Qasas: وَأَصْبَحَ فُؤَادُ أُمِّ مُوسَىٰ فَـٰرِغًا ۖ إِن كَادَتْ لَتُبْدِى بِهِۦ لَوْلَآ أَن *رَّبَطْنَا* عَلَىٰ قَلْبِهَا لِتَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ (“And the heart of Moses’ mother ached [was empty of everything that was not about Musa] so much that she almost gave away his identity, had We not reassured [*_tied up / linked_*] her heart in order for her to have faith ˹in Allah’s promise˺”).

5.) The root (و - ث - ن) refers to idol worship. From this root, we obtain the word وَثَن (“idol”) and its plural of أَوْثَانٌ (“idols”), which refers to the idols carved out of stone and other materials that the polytheists would worship. We see this word used in verse 29:17 of Surah al-Ankabut (the Chapter of the Spider): إِنَّمَا تَعْبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ *أَوْثَـٰنًا* وَتَخْلُقُونَ إِفْكًا ۚ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ تَعْبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ لَا يَمْلِكُونَ لَكُمْ رِزْقًۭا فَٱبْتَغُوا۟ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرِّزْقَ وَٱعْبُدُوهُ وَٱشْكُرُوا۟ لَهُۥٓ ۖ إِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ (“You worship besides Allah nothing but *_idols_*, simply creating lies ˹about them˺. Those you worship besides Allah certainly cannot give you any provision. So seek provision from Allah ˹alone˺, worship Him, and be grateful to Him. To Him you will ˹all˺ be returned”).
